A minute with the Mayor: I’ve always enjoyed history and often turned to the great leaders of the past for inspiration today. Winston Churchill has always been one of my favorites. And his famous quote is very apt for where we find ourselves at the start of a new year: “A pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
With recent price increases in home heating fuel, fire departments are anticipating an increase in the use of alternate heating methods, which if used unsafely can lead to serious property damage or worse. In an effort to prevent accidental fires, the Norwich Fire Marshal’s office has provided a few tips on heating safety for the winter season.
NORWICH – Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) was one of 66 public energy providers in the United States recognized as a “Smart Energy Provider” by the American Public Power Association (APPA) for demonstrating commitment to and proficiency in energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, and environmental initiatives.
As part of the three-year rate track that was approved by the NPU Board of Commissioners in September, we have developed NPU’s Community Assistance Rate (CAR). This went into effect on November 1, 2023, and will provide a discounted electric rate for eligible customers in Norwich.
NORWICH – Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) has begun the annual flushing of its water system for 2023 and expects to have the work complete by the end of September.
It is no secret that the federal and state levels of government have made unprecedented funding available to states and municipalities over the past few years. Whether it was in response to the economic challenges created by the pandemic or part of the enormous investment in our nation’s infrastructure, there are countless opportunities for funding in Hartford and Washington.
NORWICH – Two Linemen from NPU spent two weeks in May helping to close the nation’s electricity gap by hooking up Indigenous households to the power grid in the Chinle District of the Navajo Nation.
On April 12, NPU announced that it has received $10 million from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration under the Natural Gas Distribution Infrastructure Safety and Modernization Grant Program.
On February 27, 2023, Senator Richard Blumenthal announced that Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) will receive $1.6 million to support two critical projects as part of the Fiscal Year 2023 federal budget signed into law in December.
As part of an effort to enhance its in-person customer service functions, Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) will be adjusting the hours of its Customer Service Center on North Main Street to manage the flow of customer interactions each day.
