Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) operates and maintains a wastewater treatment plant that can process up to 8.5 million gallons of wastewater each day.
The plant is a vital part of keeping our community safe and healthy by safely treating wastewater and our local rivers.
In 2023, NPU broke ground for a major upgrade to our wastewater treatment plant - a $200 million project that will modernize and improve our management of wastewater from our region.
When complete, NPU’s facility will be a modern, efficient wastewater treatment plant that will dramatically improve water quality in the Yantic, Shetucket, and Thames Rivers. Every community between Norwich and Long Island Sound along the Thames River – Preston, Montville, Ledyard, Waterford, Groton, and New London – will benefit from this project.
Future Projects
NPU has partnered with a consultant to engineer and design the relocation of the current Shipping Street pump station and related sewer mains to modernize the infrastructure and mitigate flood risk by elevating the station away from the flood zone. The project is in its planning stages and will move into construction in 2027.
