NPU's Fish Lift on the Shetucket River

Fish Lift Facts

NPU operates its fish lift every spring, moving native fish through our “fish elevator” so that they can spawn upstream in the Shetucket River. The camera below shows the fish hopper.

There are many factors that impact when the fish move upstream each year, including water temperature, water turbulence, outside weather, and time of day.

Keep in mind that each square in the fish-counting window are equal to 6 inches, so a fish that extends the length of two squares is one foot long, or three squares would be 18 inches, etc.
