Norwich Public Utilities prepared for weekend storm

January 18, 2019 – With the first significant storm of 2019 expected in Connecticut over the weekend, Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) is prepared to respond to any issues that could impact the utilities’ natural gas, water, electric or wastewater services.

“At this point, we are focused on preparation and communications so that we can respond safely and effectively in the event of any service issues,” said Chris LaRose, Acting General Manager of NPU. “We will continue to watch the weather very closely in the hours ahead and through the weekend.”

The latest forecast suggests the weekend storm will start to intensify on Saturday afternoon, with snow, sleet and freezing rain expected into Sunday. Temperatures are expected to drop dramatically and quickly, which could lead to challenging conditions on roads and for electric equipment.

Following a meeting at 11:30 this morning, NPU has confirmed that the following steps have been taken ahead of this weekend’ severe weather:

  • Pre-staging the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) so that it can be completely mobilized within 20 minutes if needed. The EOC serves as a command center for NPU, Norwich Police, Fire, Public Works and Social Services Departments.
  • Closely monitoring material stockpiles, supplies and equipment.
  • Making sure all vehicles have been inspected and fueled.
  • Reviewing and confirming call schedules and availability of NPU employees to assure consistent and efficient responses to any issues impacting gas, water, electric or wastewater customers.

In addition, NPU has been in contact with fellow members of the Northeast Public Power Association (NEPPA), in the event mutual aid efforts – either providing or receiving additional utility crews – are necessary over the weekend.

NPU encourages customers to follow NPU on Facebook and Twitter to receive regular updates on outages, restoration and important safety information throughout the weekend.

Customers should report any utility issues to NPU at 860.887.2555.
