Conservation & Safety Tips


Recognizing energy efficiency as a solution to rising energy costs, Norwich Public Utilities has developed a comprehensive efficiency program because energy efficiency affects the entire Norwich community — from individuals to families to businesses.

Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) is dedicated to providing its customers with energy saving tips, tools programs and rebates for both residential and commercial customers. Here you'll also find energy conservation measures, renewable energy projects, demand response initiatives and Power Alerts, and even an energy efficiency bulletin board where customers can share energy saving ideas to pro actively reduce energy consumption and costs.

Receive Federal Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency

There are 2009 Federal Tax Credits available for replacement windows, exterior doors, roofing, insulation, and high efficiency heating and cooling equipment. Click here to learn more.

All over America, communities are taking action to help solve global warming and now Norwich is part of this group of "Cool Cities". On March 23, 2009, Mayor Ben Lathrop signed a pledge committing the city to cut greenhouse gas emissions and municipal energy use and use more renewable-energy sources. The NPU Light Bulb Program

Here's how the program works: replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to save up to 20% on lighting costs. NPU customers can purchase CFLs from the Energy Star Lights catalog at a discount. Visit the online catalog at www.estarlights.com

About Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)
Want the facts concerning the mercury contained in compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) or how to properly dispose of broken bulbs? Visit www.epa.gov/mercury for information provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on mercury contained in CFLs.

NEW! CFLs can now be disposed of at the NPU Customer Service Center, located at 173 North Main Street, Norwich and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

CFL disposal bins are also located at the following drop-off locations:

  • Otis Library, Main Street Downtown
  • Norwich City Hall, 100 Broadway
  • Rose City Senior Center, Mahan Drive
  • Norwich Public Works, Clinton Avenue
  • Norwich Transfer Station, Rogers Road
