NPU launches Let Us In – You Might Win campaign

to promote natural gas inspection & safety program

East Side, Greeneville, Laurel Hill, Taftville and Preston natural gas customers

 will have a chance to win $500 NPU credit

  As part of its annual natural gas inspection and safety program, Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) is offering more than 3,000 customers in the East Side, Greeneville, Laurel Hill and Taftville sections of Norwich and approximately 60 customers in Preston a chance to win one of five $500 credits that will be applied to their account for the next year.

All they have to do is let NPU inspect their natural gas meter – a process that typically takes less than 10 minutes.

A federal safety code regulation requires that NPU and all natural gas providers inspect one-third of its meters each year. And with more than 50% of NPU’s meters inside the homes of its customers, achieving the required 100% has proven to be a challenge.

“Inspecting a natural gas meter is a quick and easy transaction for the vast majority of our customers,” said John Bilda, General Manager of NPU. “By providing the incentives this year, we’re hoping to save time and money while raising awareness for the importance of regular meter inspections.”

Beginning on May 15, NPU will begin inspecting the natural gas meters for customers on the East Side, Greeneville, Laurel Hill and Taftville areas of Norwich and approximately 60 customers in Preston. Contest entries will be submitted as follows:

• Customers with meters on the outside of their homes will be entered into the contest once their inspection is completed;

• Customers with a meter inside their home must schedule an appointment for an inspection – and will be entered into the contest once their inspection is completed.

The biggest challenge for NPU is trying to schedule an inspection for a small number of meters inside residences who do not provide NPU with access right away, despite extensive efforts which include:

A mailed letter

A home visit / door knock with information left behind

A 2nd mailed letter

A phone call

A 3rd home visit / door knock with information left behind

As part of this year’s program, if these five steps do not result in the scheduling and completion of an inspection of the natural gas meter, NPU will assess a $25 meter access charge to the customer’s bill until access is granted. Landlords will be billed for apartment buildings where access is not granted.

And if after six months of the $25 meter access charge does not result in a scheduled and competed natural gas meter inspection, NPU will terminate natural gas service and begin the process of moving the meter outside the residence.

*The $500 credits will be applied to the accounts of the winners, who will be randomly chosen from a pool of completed inspections. NPU employees and their families are not eligible to win. NPU will announce the winner of the contest upon the completion of this year’s inspection, which is expected to be in early December, 2017.
