NPU responding to Mutual Aid request in US Virgin Islands

Norwich Public Utilities employees and equipment will be deployed to assist with power restoration efforts in the U.S. Virgin Islands as part of a mutual aid response effort under the direction of the Northeast Public Power Association (NEPPA). The U.S. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority is a member of the American Public Power Association.

“Mutual aid is an essential component of the utility industry and NPU is ready to lend a hand to those who have been so dramatically impacted by hurricanes this year,” said Chris LaRose, Assistant General Manager of NPU, who will lead the NPU response in the U.S. Virgin Islands. “NPU will do as much as we can, for as long as we can, to help as many people as we can, in the weeks ahead.”

On Sunday, October 8, three NPU employees and two vehicles will head to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida as part of the effort that will include 41 people and 29 vehicles from 15 NEPPA members.

While these details are subject to change, the vehicles and equipment from the NEPPA response will be loaded onto a barge scheduled to leave Ft. Lauderdale on October 12 that is expected to arrive in St. Thomas, USVI on October 16.

Personnel will leave Ft. Lauderdale on October 12 to begin a 14-day rotation of restoration work. It is possible that a second wave of NEPPA and NPU personnel will be dispatched on October 26.

LaRose will serve as a Field Supervisor and will be joined by Linemen Mike Summer and Tom Holmes. He will oversee NPU crews along with those from Hingham, MA, and Burlington and Stowe, VT.

NEPPA is sending a range of utility workers to assist with restoration efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria which both caused widespread damage across the US Virgin Islands, including a lead supervisor, field supervisors, digger crews, line crews, and mechanics.
