NPU’s Lost and Found now includes a drone

Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) has a new and unusual addition to its lost and found collection: a drone.

On Tuesday morning, a Promark VRP drone, weighing approximately 1.5 pounds was found by an employee near NPU’s Occum water tank during a routine inspection. The drone’s owner is asked to contact NPU at 860.887.2555 to arrange for its return, pending confirmation.

NPU is using Tuesday’s discovery to remind the public of the importance of using drones safely, particularly in relation to utility infrastructure.

“As drones become more popular, it is very important that operators understand the considerable safety concerns associated with their use,” said John Bilda, General Manager of NPU. “Drones can be fun – and helpful – but only when they are used safely, and never near power lines or any other utility infrastructure,” said Bilda.

NPU encourages drone users to follow the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) I Fly Safe pre-flight checklist before launching their flights. The check list includes the following tips:

·         Fly below 400 feet

·         Fly only within a visual line of sight

·         Be aware of FAA airspace requirements

·         Never fly over groups of people, or above stadiums or sporting events

·         Never fly within 5 miles of an airport without first contacting airport authorities

·         Never fly near emergency response efforts, such as fires

·         Never fly near another aircraft

·         Never fly under the influence of alcohol or drugs

NPU also urges drone users to be aware of public utility equipment and facilities, such as electric distribution and transmission lines, substations, wastewater treatment plants, water treatment plants and reservoirs.
